What the hell is MQTT…

This is the technology behind all the messaging applications on the web and on the mobile… it is totally free and open source.

MQTT stands for MQ Telemetry Transport. Well this is only good to know…

What is more important to know is where it is used, how it works and why is it important for us to know about it…

MQTT is like a bunch of gossipy friends… everyone in the group of friends has a TOPIC that they like to talk about… and not everyone, obviously, is interested in all the topics.

So the other friends have an option to either listen to the conversation happening on the TOPIC and NOT LISTEN to the conversation happening on the topic. Perhaps they are eagerly waiting to LISTEN to another conversation on the TOPIC of their interest..

That is exactly what MQTT is about.

In the MQTT world, there are things that are connected to it… and everyone is either LISTENING TO CONVERSATIONS or PUBLISHING or INITIATING CONVERSATIONS on topics of interest to others…

Big deal Hah ? No not at all… except when it helps you want to gossip on the internet… across the world, instantly, with all your near and dear ones… and it costs nothing… think of it as the technology behind your WhatsApp or WeChat or Skype or FB Messenger or any other chat application on your laptop or mobile…

Which means, you can not only chat by typing, you can also chat by speaking and sharing pics and vids and audios…\

What, say that again… !!! Nah, not required read above… except just learn one thing more… that that TOPICS one SUBSCRIBES TO are just GROUPS on WhatsApp or WeChat or FB Messenger or even on FB…. and the people who type a message are PUBLISHERS… and those who read those messages are SUBSCRIBERS to those TOPICS…

So when someone PUBLISHES A MESSAGE ON A TOPIC, those LISTENING TO THE TOPIC, get a chance to receive the message, look in and read it.

Now when you read this post about how to install MQTT on your Raspberry Pi or any Linux or Windows machine, you will know what the author there is talking about…
